Broadway Bound: ‘Spamalot’ from the Kennedy Center

When Josh Rhodes directed and choreographed the Kennedy Center’s production of “Monty Python’s Spamalot” earlier this year, there was little time for anything else. But the Kennedy Center has a history of transferring its productions to Broadway, and they had already secured the rights to bring “Spamalot” to New York. Despite the tight schedule, thoughts of bringing the show to Broadway never crossed Rhodes’s mind. However, the Kennedy Center announced that “Spamalot” will indeed be transferred to Broadway’s St. James Theatre, with Rhodes and casting still to be announced. Previews will begin on October 31st, with opening night on November 16th.

Jeffrey Finn, the executive producer of theater at the Kennedy Center, believes that this is the right moment to bring “Spamalot” to a wider audience. The show, based on the popular film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” will surely bring joy and happiness to Broadway audiences. Eric Idle, who wrote the book and lyrics for the musical, is thrilled to see it back on Broadway and believes that now, more than ever, people are in need of a good laugh.

The Finn-curated Broadway Center Stage series has been successful in bringing Kennedy Center-produced shows to Broadway, and this transfer of “Spamalot” is a crowning achievement for the series. The Kennedy Center has not had a show make its way to Broadway since 2011, and the hope is that the success of “Spamalot” will open the door for more Kennedy Center productions to be brought to Broadway in the future.

While there is pressure to fill the large St. James Theatre with over 1,700 seats, Rhodes is honored to have the opportunity to deliver a worthy production in such a prestigious space. The return of cast members from the Kennedy Center run would generate buzz and has proven to be successful in the past.

Overall, the transfer of “Spamalot” to Broadway is an exciting and promising venture for the Kennedy Center. If successful, it could pave the way for future productions to make their way to Broadway as well.
