Quezon sees its 7th road mishap fatality in just 6 days involving a motorcyclist

In a tragic turn of events, another motorcyclist lost their life in an unfortunate accident on August 3 in Quezon province, bringing the total number of motorbike-related deaths in the area to seven within just six days. According to a report from Quezon police, the unidentified motorcyclist was hit by a truck driven by Rolando Gatucao at 12:55 a.m. The collision occurred at the intersection of the by-pass road in Barangay Tumbaga 1 in Sariaya town. The rider sustained fatal head injuries and unfortunately died at the scene. Gatucao, the truck driver, surrendered to the police.

It is worth noting that the report did not mention whether Gatucao was wearing a crash helmet or not. However, it is essential to highlight that wearing a crash helmet is a requirement under the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009. This law is implemented to ensure the safety of motorcyclists and reduce the risk of severe injuries or fatalities in accidents.

On August 1, another tragic incident occurred when a motorcycle driven by Genesis Militante, 30, and his brother, Joshua, 27, was hit by an Izusu aluminum van driven by Melvin Valerio at around 10 p.m. The collision took place on the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Malinao Ibaba in Atimonan town. Both victims were wearing crash helmets but suffered grave body and head injuries. Genesis passed away while being transported to Doña Marta Memorial District Hospital, while Joshua succumbed to his injuries during medical treatment. Investigators discovered that the Isuzu van overtook another vehicle and ended up occupying the opposite lane, resulting in the tragic collision. Valerio has been detained and will face criminal charges.

Moreover, an earlier incident occurred on July 29 when another motorcyclist collided with a commuter bus along the Maharlika Highway in Tayabas City. Unfortunately, the rider was not wearing a crash helmet, which might have contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained.

It is distressing to observe that in Calauag town and Atimonan, three motorcyclists lost their lives in separate accidents on the same day, July 29. These three individuals also did not have a helmet for head protection, further emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety regulations.

The statistics provided by the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group are alarming. From January to April of this year alone, 4,029 motorcycle accidents were reported in the country, accounting for nearly half of the total 8,342 accidents recorded for the entire year of 2022.

It is crucial for all motorcyclists to prioritize their safety by wearing proper protective gear, especially crash helmets, in order to mitigate the risks associated with riding. This tragic series of accidents in Quezon province serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to safety measures to prevent further loss of lives on the road.
