Israeli Airstrike Hits Damascus Airport, Rendering it Out of Service
BEIRUT — The Syrian state media has reported that an Israeli airstrike on the international airport in Damascus, the capital, has rendered it non-operational.
Over the last several months, Israel has targeted Syria’s airports, including those in Damascus and Aleppo, repeatedly, particularly during the Hamas-Israel conflict that began on October 7. Additional strikes also occurred in western Syria in response to rocket fire on the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), with reference to an unnamed military official, stated that Israel launched missiles from the Golan Heights, hitting Damascus International Airport and other surrounding areas, causing material damage. The report did not mention any casualties.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based opposition monitor of the war, the airstrikes took place just hours after the airport had resumed flight operations following a one-month suspension due to a previous Israeli airstrike.
Israel has conducted numerous strikes on government-controlled areas of Syria in recent years, targeting Iranian-backed groups that support President Bashar Assad’s regime. Although Israel typically does not acknowledge these operations, when it does, it states that the strikes are aimed at Iranian-backed forces operating in Syria.
