Relaxing Island Getaway: Mosquito-Free and Chemical-Free

Soneva Fushi, a Maldives resort on the private Kunfunadhoo Island, knows the inconvenience and health risks posed by mosquitoes. That’s why they partnered with Biogents, a Germany-based company, to tackle the mosquito problem. Their eco-friendly mosquito traps, the BG-GAT and the BG-Mosquitaire CO2, have been strategically placed all over the island, a total of over 500 traps in 2019. The traps have been highly effective in catching mosquitoes, with significant reductions in the mosquito population on the island.

Beyond just using the traps, Soneva Fushi has actively educated their staff on mosquito ecology and conducts regular property inspections to identify and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites. As a result, the resort has seen a drastic decrease in the island’s mosquito population, with an over 98% reduction within the first year of using the Biogents trap system.

The success of the eco-friendly pest control program has not only brought back the island’s native insects but has also led to an increase in biodiversity. The resort’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices aligns with its origins as a pioneer in environmental sustainability.

Their work with Biogents extends beyond their own resort, as they have provided mosquito traps to the Parliament in Malé and implemented the Biogents system in their other resort locations. Soneva aims to be the first mosquito-free island in the Maldives and hopes that other resorts will follow their lead to create a mosquito-free paradise in the region. With zero mosquitoes recorded at their new resort development, Soneva Secret, they look forward to opening a mosquito-free resort in the near future.

Soneva Fushi remains dedicated to providing sustainable luxury and promoting eco-friendly practices in the hospitality industry.
