Suspension of Aid to Gabon following Military Takeover: A Comprehensive Analysis and Implications

The U.S. has suspended a majority of non-humanitarian military aid to Gabon following a military takeover of the African nation last month, as reported by The Associated Press.

In a statement released by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, it was announced that the government is currently “pausing certain foreign assistance programs benefiting the government of Gabon” in order to assess the “unconstitutional intervention by members of the country’s military.”

“This interim measure aligns with the actions taken by the Economic Community of Central African States, the African Union, and other international partners. It will remain in effect as we closely analyze the situation in Gabon,” stated Blinken. “U.S. government activities in Gabon, including diplomatic and consular operations for U.S. citizens, will continue uninterrupted.”

This takeover marks the second instance of a military coup in an African nation this year, following a similar incident in Niger that led to the partial suspension of U.S. aid to its government, as reported by The AP. The U.S. has not officially classified the event in Niger as a coup yet.

According to The AP, Gen. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the leader of an elite military unit, assumed power in Gabon one week after President Ali Bongo Ondimba was removed. Ondimba’s family had governed the Central African country for over fifty years.
