Study finds: Top states with highest rates of teen alcohol use and the dangers of underage drinking

A new study conducted by Addiction Treatment Magazine, an addiction recovery resource, unveils the states in the U.S. with the highest and lowest rates of underage drinking. The researchers examined data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) based on the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study focused on young people aged 12 to 20 and their consumption of alcohol within the past month, as well as their engagement in binge-drinking, defined as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting. Based on the findings, it was determined that Vermont has the highest prevalence of underage drinking in the country. Roughly 25% of minors in Vermont have consumed alcohol, and over 14% have engaged in binge-drinking. Other states with high rates include Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Conversely, Mississippi has the lowest prevalence of underage drinking, with only 9.7% of underage individuals consuming alcohol and a binge-drinking rate of 5.4%. The study suggests that Vermont’s high prevalence may be due to its rural nature and the presence of numerous colleges and universities, which have the highest number per capita in the country. Overall, the study emphasizes the ongoing concern of underage drinking and the need for continued efforts to address this issue and protect the well-being of young people. Dr. Chris Tuell, clinical director of addiction services for the Lindner Center of HOPE in Ohio, reiterates the risks of early alcohol use and emphasizes the importance of parental influence in preventing underage drinking. Factors such as packaging geared towards youth and the association of alcohol use with sporting events may contribute to the high rates in certain states.
