September 14 (UPI) – Pittsburgh Steelers’ star defensive tackle, Cameron Heyward, will undergo surgery on Thursday to treat a groin injury that he sustained during the team’s game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Heyward, who attempted to continue playing but was ultimately ruled out at halftime, is expected to miss approximately eight weeks of play. This news was first reported by sources from NFL Network, ESPN, and The Athletic earlier this week.

According to NFL Network’s latest report, Heyward’s surgery is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh on Thursday, and his estimated recovery time will be around two months. There is a possibility that he may return to the field around midseason. Heyward’s absence will undoubtedly have an impact on the team, as he has been a consistent force on the defensive line and has only missed one game since 2017. In the 2022 season, Heyward recorded 10.5 sacks, and in 2021, he had 10 sacks, adding to his impressive career stats.

With 78.8 sacks, Heyward is currently third on the list of players with the most sacks in Steelers’ history, trailing behind only James Harrison (80.5) and T.J. Watt (80.5). He also ranks sixth alongside Dermontti Dawson for the most games played in franchise history, with 184 games under his belt. Heyward signed a lucrative four-year, $65.6 million deal with the Steelers in 2020 and is contracted with the team until 2024.

During Heyward’s absence, the Steelers will look to other players to step up and fill his shoes. Keeanu Benton, DeMarvin Leal, Armon Watts, and Isaiahh Loudermilk are among the potential candidates who will have the opportunity to make an impact on the field. The next game for the Steelers is a divisional matchup against the Cleveland Browns, scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh on Monday at 8:15 p.m. EDT.
