Discover the 10 British Areas with the Fewest Electric Car Charging Stations: Presenting a New Map

The towns with the fewest electric car charging stations have been revealed, dealing a blow to EV owners. One region in particular has zero charging bays, according to data from the Department for Transport and ZapMap (July 2023).

The Isles of Scilly is the only part of the UK without any public charging devices. On the mainland, Castle Point in South Essex has the least number of EV bays. However, all three of its public charging bays are rapid plugs that can charge a car in just 30 minutes.

Melton in Leicestershire ranks third with nine charging stations and two rapid bays. Fenland in East Anglia follows closely with only 10 bays, one of which is rapid charging.

In the Staffordshire Moorlands district, near Alton Towers, there are 12 electric charging bays, with only one of them being rapid. North Kesteven in Sleaford has 16 devices, while The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire has 17.

North East Derbyshire has 18 devices, as does Rutland near Peterborough.

Merthyr Tydfil completes the top 10 with 18 charging devices, with only two being rapid. A spokesperson from the Department for Transport stated that over £2 billion has been invested in supporting the transition to electric vehicles, resulting in over 45,000 public charging devices across the UK.

The spokesperson added, “The number of public chargepoints increased by 38 percent in the last year, putting us well on track to reach 300,000 by 2030.”

However, when comparing charging devices per 100,000 people, larger areas are included in the concern for road users. For example, Wirral, despite having over 30 bays, has 9.7 devices per 100,000 people and made it into the top 10.

Bolton ranks fifth with 12.2 devices per 100,000 people. Walsall, Sandwell, and Ards and North Down also make the list with 14 plugs or fewer per 100,000 people.

Toddington Harper, CEO at GRIDSERVE, emphasized the importance of ensuring no areas are left behind in the transition to electric models. He stated, “The number of EV charging points available is increasing at an unprecedented rate, and it is crucial that every town and region is included. GRIDSERVE fully supports initiatives that facilitate widespread EV charging across the UK, including rural areas.”
