Startling Research Reveals 33% of the UK Population Suffers from Vitamin D Deficiency: Causes include Indoor Lifestyles, Inadequate Nutrition, and Negligence towards Supplements

  • The Importance of Vitamin D for Bone and Muscle Health

A new study suggests that spending too much time indoors may be causing a vitamin D deficiency in over a third of the population.

Vitamin D, also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, is essential for bone and muscle health. It helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis, type-1 diabetes, respiratory diseases, and other ailments.

Unfortunately, many Britons of all ages are not getting enough vitamin D due to factors such as poor diet, lack of outdoor activity, and failure to take supplements.

A review published in the Food and Nutrition Journal analyzed data from a study involving 210,502 patients who took a Vitamin D test. The review found that a third of the participants did not meet the accepted blood level of 30 nmol/litre, rising to two-thirds in people with darker skin.

While sunlight is the most recognized source of vitamin D, it can be affected by sunscreen use, air pollution, cloud cover, and a person’s own skin melanin content.
