The wildfire situation in Quebec is showing signs of improvement, according to the province’s wildfire prevention agency. Recent rainfall in southern and eastern Quebec has helped reduce the risk of fires. However, there are still some large fires burning, particularly in the region bordering James Bay.

Stephane Caron, spokesman for the agency SOPFEU, stated that although the situation is improving, the remaining fires are still extensive. For example, the fire near the city of Lebel-sur-Quevillon, which had to be evacuated twice in June, covers an area of over 4,000 square kilometers. While this fire has been contained, it is not yet under control and could worsen if the area experiences another dry spell.

Dry conditions also persist in the northwestern Jamesie region, where several large fires are currently burning. Despite this, Environment Canada has lifted the smog warnings that had been in effect for several days across the province.

In light of the improved situation, Quebec’s Natural Resources and Forests Department has decided to reduce the area covered by an outdoor fire ban. The ban primarily affects the province’s northwest, as well as two small areas in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
