TROY — Brooks Carey, the pitching coach for the Tri-City ValleyCats, has had a remarkable career in minor league baseball. Not only did he room with Cal Ripken Jr., a future Hall of Famer, but he also participated in the longest game in professional baseball history. Despite coming close, Carey never made it to the Major Leagues due to shoulder problems.

Carey recalls the frustration of being on the cusp of reaching the big leagues, only to be hindered by medication use and excessive innings on his shoulder. However, he has now made peace with it.
Now, in his first year with the ValleyCats, Carey imparts his knowledge and experiences to his pitchers. Previously, he served as the manager of the New Jersey Jackals, the ValleyCats’ Frontier League rival. When his baseball career seemed over, he received a call from the ValleyCats’ manager, Pete Incaviglia, offering him the pitching coach position.
Despite their reliance on old-school methods rather than analytics, Carey and Incaviglia have developed a great working relationship. The ValleyCats’ team earned-run average has improved under Carey’s guidance, and the players appreciate his passion for the game.
Carey’s time as a player was not without its challenges, but he formed a close bond with Cal Ripken Jr. during their time together in the minors. They even played in the longest game in history, which saw their team endure 33 innings and culminate in a June 23 finish.
