Oct. 6 (UPI) — American gymnast Simone Biles achieved her sixth all-around world championship title on Friday in Belgium, establishing her as the most accomplished gymnast ever.

This remarkable feat occurred a decade after her first all-around win, which coincidentally took place at the same arena, Sportpaleis in Antwerp.

Biles’s victory on Friday makes her the first female gymnast to claim six all-around world championships. The only other athlete to accomplish this feat is Japanese male gymnast Kōhei Uchimura.

She achieved a total score of 58.399 in the all-around event. Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, the reigning all-around champion, secured second place with a score of 56.766, while American gymnast Shilese Jones took bronze with a score of 56.332. The American women’s team also achieved a record-setting seventh consecutive team gold on Wednesday.

Biles’s individual success was highlighted by first-place finishes in the vault (15.100), balance beam (14.433), and floor exercise (14.533). She finished sixth in the uneven bars with a score of 14.333, while Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour secured first place with a score of 15.200.

In the vault event, Biles chose not to perform the Yurchenko double pike, widely known as the Biles II, and instead executed a clean landing on a Cheng, the second-most difficult vault. Although she didn’t finish first in the uneven bars, she delivered a flawless performance. While she encountered some minor challenges on the balance beam and floor routine, Biles managed to secure first-place finishes by executing all her skills successfully, as reported by NBC News.

With Friday’s gold medal, Biles now possesses 34 medals from world championship and Olympic competitions, establishing herself as the most successful gymnast in history. Her performance in the all-around event means she has the opportunity to win even more medals in the four individual event competitions on Saturday and Sunday.

Biles aims to replicate her triumph in every individual event, as she did in 2018 when she became the first female gymnast to achieve this feat in 30 years.

Despite taking extended breaks following the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, as well as withdrawing from multiple events in the latter, Biles’s record-breaking accomplishment on Friday proves her remarkable resilience, as highlighted in this article by USA Today.
