Seniors May Find Motivation to Walk Through Research

A recent study conducted by the University of Maryland has revealed that a brisk walk can lead to smarter minds and better memories, particularly in older adults. The research involved around 30 individuals in their 70s and 80s, with half of them being asked to brisk walk for 30 minutes, four times a week. After 12 weeks, the study found that the walkers displayed better brain function and stronger neural connections, slowing the aging process of the brain. Professor J. Carson Smith, the study’s principal investigator, said that exercise can induce the brain’s ability to change and adapt. The walkers’ brain connections grew stronger, and they did better on memory tests, particularly when recalling details of a story read to them. Additionally, the study suggests that brisk walking can reduce cognitive impairments and perhaps delay the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia. To reap these benefits, it is recommended to walk at a speed tailored to one’s abilities, typically around 3mph.
