Roz Brewer, Walgreens’ CEO, steps down from position in under 3 years

Walgreens Boots Alliance announced on Friday that CEO Rosalind “Roz” Brewer will be stepping down from her position as the head of the global pharmacy chain after less than three years. The company has appointed Ginger Graham, an independent director on the board, as the interim chief executive. Brewer will continue to advise Walgreens while they search for a permanent CEO, but she will also be relinquishing her seat on the board.

Brewer took on the role of CEO at Walgreens in March 2021. Prior to that, she held various high-level positions at companies such as Starbucks and Walmart-owned Sam’s Club.

In their announcement of Brewer’s departure, Walgreens credited her for leading the company’s efforts in swiftly providing mass vaccinations during the pandemic. They highlighted her achievements in establishing a vaccine scheduling system, creating a safe operating model for store labor, and promoting vaccine equity. Additionally, Brewer played a significant role in resolving litigation related to Walgreens’ involvement in the opioid crisis, with the company agreeing to pay billions of dollars in settlements.

Walgreens is currently shifting its focus towards offering healthcare services, moving away from retail sales. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, stated that while healthcare is a lucrative sector, the new permanent CEO should not neglect the potential for growth in the retail business.
