Resuming Street Patrols, Iran’s Morality Police Reinstate Headscarf Mandate for Women Following Prolonged Protests

Iran’s morality police has resumed their patrolling of the streets to enforce the wearing of Islamic headscarves by women. This comes after a period of withdrawal in response to nationwide protests over the death of a young woman while in custody. The protests, which began after the death of Mahsa Amini last September, had subsided earlier this year due to a violent crackdown that resulted in hundreds of protester deaths and thousands of detentions.

During the crisis, authorities maintained that the rules regarding headscarves hadn’t changed, despite the decreased presence of the morality police. The hijab is seen by Iran’s clerical rulers as a fundamental aspect of the Islamic revolution that brought them to power over four decades ago.

A police spokesperson announced on Sunday that the morality police will resume their practice of notifying and detaining women found in public without a hijab. In Tehran, both men and women from the morality police can now be seen patrolling the streets in marked vans.

The controversy surrounding the hijab had become a rallying point during the fall protests, with women playing a prominent role. The demonstrations quickly escalated, with protesters calling for the overthrow of Iran’s clerical rulers, whom they accuse of being corrupt, repressive, and out of touch. The government of Iran blamed the protests on foreign interference without providing evidence.

The protests also saw the involvement of Iranian celebrities, including renowned directors and actors from the country’s esteemed film industry. Some Iranian actresses were detained for appearing in public without a hijab or expressing support for the protests.
