Resolution Reached in Lawsuit Accusing Yale of Mental Health Discrimination

Yale University has reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit accusing the institution of discriminating against students with mental health disabilities. The university, in collaboration with a student group called Elis for Rachael, has agreed to modify its policies concerning medical leaves of absence. The aim is to streamline the process for reinstating students who return to campus after taking leave.

The student group, which also represents alumni, has long argued that the existing process was burdensome and discouraged students from taking medical leave when they needed it most. This settlement marks a significant moment for the university and mental health patients, as it affirms the belief that students with mental health needs deserve equal treatment.

In a joint statement released by Elis for Rachael and Yale, the university will now offer the option for students to study part-time if they have urgent medical needs. This is the first time such an accommodation will be available at Yale. Additionally, students granted this accommodation at the beginning of a new term will receive a 50% reduction in tuition fees.

Dean Pericles Lewis of Yale College expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that he hopes these changes will make it easier for students to seek support, prioritize their health and well-being, and take time off when necessary, knowing they can resume their studies when ready. This settlement represents a significant step towards inclusivity and support for students with mental health disabilities at Yale University.
