Antarctica’s esteemed emperor penguins are facing the imminent threat of extinction due to the rapid melting of sea ice, according to a concerning study conducted by scientists at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The study suggests that if current trends of global warming continue, 90 percent of emperor penguin colonies could be wiped out by the end of the century. This alarming prediction is based on the analysis of satellite imagery from 2022, which revealed the absence of any chicks from four out of the five known groups breeding near the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea.
The failure to produce offspring in these colonies represents an unprecedented occurrence for the region, and experts believe that the situation will only worsen in the coming years. Dr. Peter Fretwell, a Geographic Information Officer at the BAS, stated, “We have never witnessed emperor penguins fail to breed at this scale in a single season.” The breeding period for emperor penguins typically takes place from March to April. During this time, males and females engage in courtship, with each pair usually forming a bond that lasts for a year.
From May to July, the female penguins lay their eggs on stable sea ice while the males stay behind to incubate the eggs for a duration of 65 to 75 days. Chicks are typically born in the period between August and November and remain close to their parents for several months. During this time, the chicks possess fluffy feathers that are not waterproof, necessitating their avoidance of the sea. It is not until December or January that the chicks fully “fledge” and acquire water-tight adult feathers.
The loss of sea ice during the Antarctic summer in the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea has made it highly challenging for displaced chicks to survive. Dr. Fretwell noted, “We know that emperor penguins are highly vulnerable in a warming climate, and current scientific evidence suggests that extreme sea ice loss events like this will become more frequent and widespread.”
