Report alleges McDonald’s managers sent explicit images and coerced teens into sexual encounters

More than 100 employees at McDonald’s in the UK, many of whom are underage, have allegedly faced various forms of abuse by their managers, ranging from bullying to sexual assault, according to a BBC investigation. The probe was launched after McDonald’s signed an agreement with Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to tackle sexual harassment. The investigation, conducted over five months, uncovered instances where managers reportedly sent explicit images to teenage workers, coerced subordinates into performing sexual acts, and used racial slurs. The report revealed that out of over 100 alleged breaches of the contract, 78 were related to sexual harassment, 31 to sexual assault, 18 to racism, and six to homophobia. One of the most shocking claims came from a 17-year-old employee in Cheshire, England, who accused her 37-year-old supervisor of making inappropriate remarks and requesting to show her his genitals. Another employee from Norwich, England, stated that the company had a policy of placing “attractive people at the front” of the restaurant. McDonald’s is one of the largest private-sector employers in the UK, with approximately 1,450 restaurants and 117,000 employees, three-quarters of whom are aged 16 to 25. The company’s CEO in the UK and Ireland, Alistair Macrow, issued an apology for any failures in providing a safe and inclusive workplace and vowed to investigate all allegations. The EHRC stated that employers are legally responsible for preventing sexual harassment under the Equality Act 2010. It is currently unknown if any employees have been fired as a result of the abuse claims. The BBC’s report also highlighted cases of verbal abuse and instances of employees engaging in sexual relationships. The EHRC has established an anonymous email hotline for other potential victims of harassment.
