A Woman’s Terrifying Encounter: Gilgo Beach Suspect and the True Crime Genre

  • Almost a decade ago, a woman had a disturbing encounter with Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann.
  • During their dinner, he asked her unsettling questions about true crime and the Gilgo Beach killer.
  • Heuermann’s behavior made her uncomfortable, leading her to decline dessert and end the date.

Perhaps it was his peculiar fascination with true crime or his knowledge of the Gilgo Beach serial killings, even before they made headlines, that unnerved Nikkie Brass during her encounter with Rex Heuermann almost ten years ago.

Brass, then in her twenties, abruptly ended what she describes as her “date” with Heuermann, who has since been charged with the murders of three sex workers and dumping their bodies along a bayfront highway.

Sharing her experience on TikTok through her account @your_recovery_stylist, Brass admitted that Heuermann “really weirded me out.”

She recalled, “I didn’t want dessert,” as she hastily left the dinner.

Heuermann, a 59-year-old father of two, was apprehended last week with the help of federal, state, and local investigators using evidence such as cell phone tower data, DNA found at the crime scenes, and an internet search history filled with disturbing content.

Back then, Brass had met Heuermann on one of the less reputable dating websites while she was residing on Long Island.

Now residing in New England, the hairstylist and mother wants to warn others about the dangers of such websites, leading her to share her story with news outlets like Insider and Good Morning America.

Like many Long Islanders, Brass closely followed the unsolved Gilgo Beach serial murder case, which involved the deaths of four young sex workers. Prosecutors believe the same client, Heuermann, was responsible for these killings.

What disturbed Brass the most about Heuermann was his knowledge of a victim whose death hadn’t been publicized at the time of their date.

Uncertain about how to proceed, Brass considered going to the police because Heuermann shared information that hadn’t been released to the public. This revelation led her to end the date.

Since she was already following the news and the case closely, Brass trusted her instincts and left the seafood restaurant they had met in Port Jefferson.

Heuermann had asked her to accompany him to his place at the end of the evening, but Brass declined, feeling uncomfortable being alone in a car with a stranger.

His insistence did not persuade her, and she stood her ground. Heuermann grew angry and insistent, further solidifying Brass’ decision to leave.

Brass expresses gratitude in her TikTok video, stating, “Thank god. I trusted my gut. I left after that check came. And I never spoke to that man again.”
