It is truly astonishing that some individuals still believe that the United Kingdom joined the US-led invasion of Iraq in an attempt to liberate the Iraqi people from a brutal dictator. The reality is that the invasion was primarily a US initiative driven by its Middle East foreign policy objectives.
Unlike Harold Wilson, who wisely chose not to involve British forces in Vietnam, Tony Blair eagerly joined in the Iraq endeavor, seemingly more concerned with bolstering his international reputation than with serving the best interests of his own country.
As John Bolton pointed out, the United States’ motivation for removing Saddam Hussein and his regime was to eliminate threats to Israel and the oil-rich nations of the Middle East. We should not forget that Saddam had launched Scud missiles at Tel Aviv during the first Gulf War, a grave mistake indeed.
It is my hope that Mr. Bolton’s assessment will put an end to any attempts to justify the invasion of Iraq on weak and unfounded grounds.
The fact that Members of Parliament accepted Mr. Blair’s claim about a 45-minute threat of weapons of mass destruction targeting British territories is truly disgraceful. There was already publicly available information that clearly indicated the United States’ motives for wanting to overthrow Saddam’s regime.

I believe it is important to consider the potential consequences if the United Kingdom had not joined forces with the United States, especially in light of America’s unwavering determination (amidst the Chirac-Putin alliance at the time). Unchecked US action, entangled in the inevitable descent into sectarian chaos, would have been catastrophic, leading to an equally perilous global dynamic today.
