Received an Interior Designer’s Review of My Kitchen, Along With Valuable Design Tips

In my quest to transform my small rental kitchen into a more spacious and cohesive space, I sought the advice of an interior designer, Reya Duenas. After sharing photos and a video tour of my kitchen, Duenas provided valuable insights on how to maximize the functionality and design of the space.

One of the main issues in my kitchen is the lack of counter space. As an avid home chef, I struggled to find enough room for food preparation and cooking. To tackle this problem, Duenas recommended decluttering the countertops by removing unnecessary items such as butter dishes and small canisters. If certain items need to remain on the counters, she suggested organizing them in a tray or basket to create a more intentional and stylish look. Duenas also advised relocating coffee-related appliances away from the sink to free up additional space. She suggested using a cart as a dedicated coffee station or investing in a new one that can accommodate all the appliances.

Duenas emphasized the importance of utilizing vertical space to create a sense of openness in the kitchen. While acknowledging the presence of a nice table in the dinette, she proposed replacing it with an extendable table to accommodate more guests and easily adjust its size when not in use. Additionally, she recommended opting for a counter or bar height table to create the illusion of a larger space.

To address the storage challenges in the kitchen, Duenas suggested replacing a small shelving unit with a larger sideboard cabinet. This would provide ample storage for kitchen appliances and accessories, eliminating the need to scatter them across random closets throughout the house. This solution would also free up valuable counter space and potentially serve as a home for the coffee station.

Achieving cohesion between the kitchen and the adjacent living room was another concern. Duenas advised choosing a stylistic focus for each area rather than attempting to blend two contrasting styles. She identified the industrial vibe of the bar cart and shelving unit as a mismatch with the rustic and mid-century modern elements present in the kitchen and living room respectively. She recommended selecting one style and curating the decor accordingly. Duenas also suggested replacing a large recliner with a more compact chair to improve the flow between the two spaces.

In terms of design accents, Duenas acknowledged the stark contrast between the black appliances and white countertops in the kitchen. While swapping out the appliances would be ideal, she recognized the limitations of being a renter. Instead, she proposed incorporating black elements into the decor, such as artwork, a runner, or frames, to create balance and tie in with the appliances.

Overall, Duenas reinforced the importance of larger storage solutions to optimize the space and minimize countertop clutter. She made me realize the need to invest in functional pieces that provide ample storage while still being aesthetically pleasing. By following her advice, I can create a more cohesive and spacious kitchen that aligns with the rest of my home.
