Marlins’ Luis Arraez Matches Ty Cobb Record, Delivers Perfect 5 for 5 Performance against Blue Jays

Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez continued his remarkable hitting season by going a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate for the second time in three games, helping his team secure an impressive 11-0 shutout victory against the Toronto Blue Jays in Miami.

Arraez not only had a flawless day at the plate, but he also contributed two runs and scored once, boosting his batting average from .388 to .400. When asked about his exceptional performance, Arraez spoke confidently, saying, “I trust myself. I just come here and I play hard.”

This exceptional outing comes after Arraez broke his 0 for 15 slump by going 5 for 5 in another win against the Washington Nationals on Friday. During his struggling streak, his season average had dipped from .438 to .378, making his recent resurgence even more impressive.

Arraez’s latest five-hit game puts him in the elite company of Dave Winfield, Ty Cobb, and George Sisler as the only players in MLB history to achieve this feat three times in a single month. Winfield was the last player to accomplish this, achieving it in June 1984. If Arraez manages to achieve another five-hit game in the next 11 days, he will become the first player since 1900 to achieve this feat four times in a season, joining the likes of Cobb, Stan Musial, Tony Gwynn, and Ichiro Suzuki.

It is worth noting that no MLB player has achieved a batting average of at least .400 for a full season since Ted Williams accomplished this remarkable feat in 1941. Additionally, Arraez has become the first player in 2023 to record at least 100 hits, achieving this milestone in just 67 games.

In Monday’s game, Arraez kick-started the Marlins’ offense with leadoff singles in both the first and third innings. He scored his first run of the game when Jorge Soler hit a home run in the next at-bat. Garrett Cooper later extended the Marlins’ lead to 3-0 with an RBI single.

Arraez continued his hitting spree with a third consecutive single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Soler contributed to the Marlins’ lead once again with an RBI sacrifice fly, while Jesus Sanchez added to the score with an RBI groundout.

Arraez’s fourth hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Marlins exploded for five runs in the seventh inning, with Arraez driving in two runners with another single. Joey Wendle, Jon Berti, and Bryan De La Cruz also contributed RBIs in the inning.

In the eighth inning, rookie Jacob Amaya replaced Arraez at second base and sealed the victory with an RBI single. Berti had an impressive day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. Cooper, De La Cruz, and Sanchez each recorded two hits in the game.

On the pitching side, Bryan Hoeing started for the Marlins, allowing no runs on just three hits over four innings. The relief pitchers, including Archie Bradley, J.T. Chargois, and Huascar Brazoban, continued the dominant performance by not allowing any runs and giving up only four hits over the final five innings.

The Blue Jays’ starter, Jose Berrios, had a rough outing, surrendering eight hits and five runs over four innings, resulting in his season record dropping to 7-5.

Despite their impressive five-game winning streak, the Marlins (42-31) are still 4.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves (46-26) in the National League East. However, they have won seven of their last 10 games, showing their potential for a strong playoff push.

Arraez and the Marlins will face off against the Blue Jays (39-35) again on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. EDT in Miami.
