Quebec Advises Vulnerable Individuals to Receive COVID-19 Booster Dose in the Fall

The Quebec Health Ministry announced on Wednesday that vulnerable or at-risk individuals in the province should receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster in the fall.

This recommendation comes following guidance from Quebec’s immunization committee and Dr. Luc Boileau, the director of public health.

The Health Ministry defines vulnerable or at-risk individuals as older adults, residents of private residences or long-term care homes, those with chronic illnesses or compromised immune systems, pregnant individuals, and healthcare workers. Adults living in remote or isolated regions should also receive a booster.

The department recommends a minimum of six months between vaccine doses.

“The new vaccine will be offered first to vulnerable individuals,” the Health Ministry stated in a press release. “However, it will also be available to the general population at vaccination and screening centers, as well as community pharmacies.”

Quebec’s vaccination campaign is slated to begin in October, pending approval of a new vaccine specifically designed to combat the latest COVID-19 variants by Health Canada. Health Minister Christian Dubé has emphasized that the province is closely monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 rapid tests are still available in pharmacies for vulnerable individuals. Others can obtain testing kits at vaccination and screening centers.
