‘Putin Evaluates Wagner in the Wake of Mutiny’

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently held a meeting with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group. This meeting took place at the Kremlin on June 29 and included commanders from Prigozhin’s military company. Prigozhin, who had been involved in a short-lived rebellion, has had a strained relationship with Russia’s top military brass. However, he called off the mutiny after reaching a deal to be exiled to Belarus. The confirmation of Putin’s face-to-face meeting with Prigozhin adds another layer of uncertainty to the situation. Since the rebellion, Prigozhin’s fate and whereabouts have remained unknown, leading to a significant weakening of Putin’s authority.

During the meeting, Putin assessed Wagner’s actions on the battlefield in Ukraine and discussed the events of June 24. He also listened to the explanations of the commanders and offered them options for future employment and combat. The commanders reinforced their loyalty to Putin and expressed their willingness to continue fighting for their homeland. The meeting included 35 participants, including Wagner commanders and the company’s leadership, including Prigozhin.

In addition, Russia’s Defense Ministry released a video featuring Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the country’s military chief. This was the first appearance of Gerasimov since the rebellion aimed to remove him from his position. Prigozhin had publicly criticized Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu for their failure to provide ammunition to his fighters in Ukraine. These latest updates seem to be an attempt by Moscow to regain control of the narrative following a turbulent period.

It is worth noting that in March, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of war crimes and personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine.
