Prigozhin Moving to Belarus for Residential Purposes

The leader of the recent rebellion against the Russian government will have the criminal charges against him dropped, as announced by a Kremlin spokesperson late on Saturday. In a conference call with reporters, Dmitri Peskov stated that Yevgeny Prigozhin will be going to Belarus, with his safety guaranteed by President Vladimir Putin. The spokesperson admitted that he didn’t know what Prigozhin’s plans were for Belarus. This development comes as Russian officials have outlined the terms of the deal, which leads to the head of the Wagner Group halting his private army’s advance towards Moscow, effectively ending the threat to Putin’s rule.

Additionally, Wagner troops who participated in the rebellion will not face charges, in recognition of their service in Ukraine. Those who did not join Prigozhin’s advance are welcome to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense, according to the New York Times. Prigozhin, who had occupied the city of Rostov-on-Don, has left the area after concluding his operation. Visual evidence shows him being driven away while being cheered on by the crowd, as reported by the Washington Post.

Interestingly, just hours before the charges against Prigozhin were dropped, Putin had threatened to punish those responsible for the uprising. When asked about this, Peskov stated that the concessions made to Prigozhin were to avoid bloodshed, internal confrontation, and unpredictable clashes. He did not confirm whether one of these concessions was the removal of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, as demanded by Prigozhin. (Read more Russia rebellion stories.)
