Presence of E.coli Bacteria Found in Water Supply of Grand Canyon National Park

E. Coli bacteria has been discovered in the water supply within Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, according to an advisory released by the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS urged visitors at Phantom Ranch, a lodge located at the southern end of the Grand Canyon, to boil water before use. The NPS emphasized that these bacteria can cause illness, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. The contamination can occur due to factors such as increased run-off from heavy rains or breaks in the distribution system or water treatment process. The NPS advises all water to be boiled for one minute per 1,000 feet of elevation before drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice, or cooking. Bottled water is also a safe alternative. Currently, no other areas outside of Phantom Ranch have tested positive for E. Coli. If symptoms such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, respiratory illness, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, or other severe illness persist for more than three days, it is recommended to seek medical attention. In rare cases, E. Coli can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and cause kidney failure or other life-threatening complications. The NPS is actively working to address the situation, implementing control system adjustments, and restarting the chlorination process. They are conducting extensive sampling for coliform bacteria to identify and eliminate the source of contamination. The NPS will inform the public when tests show no bacteria and boiling water is no longer necessary. It is encouraged for individuals in the area to share this advisory and to contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 for further guidance on reducing the risk of infection.
