Poll Finds Half of Americans Highly Interested in Updated COVID Vaccine

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that approximately 50% of Americans have shown interest in receiving a new COVID-19 vaccine. This poll, conducted online between September 8-14, gathered responses from 4,413 U.S. adults.

In terms of interest levels, the survey discovered that nearly 30% of respondents were “very interested” in getting the updated vaccine, while 24% expressed being “somewhat interested.”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the use of these updated vaccines, aiming to provide Americans with enhanced protection ahead of a potential rise in infections during the winter season. The FDA assures that these vaccines have undergone rigorous testing and are safe to use.

Interestingly, the poll also reveals a decline in overall concern about the spread of the virus. 54% of respondents expressed personal concern about the virus, marking a significant drop compared to a poll conducted three years ago, where 77% expressed concern. At the height of the pandemic in early 2020, this personal concern was shared by 90% of respondents.

One notable aspect highlighted by the poll is the fear surrounding the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Among those who expressed disinterest in the vaccine, 36% cited concerns about its safety.

Dr. Jesse Goodman, an infectious disease expert at Georgetown University and former chief scientist at the FDA, expressed concern about the misinformation and fear mongering surrounding the vaccine. He stated, “It really concerns me that over 30% think it is dangerous when there’s really no credible evidence of that, yet a lot of disinformation and, honestly, fear mongering,” during an interview with Reuters.

This poll provides valuable insights into the public’s perception and interests regarding COVID-19 vaccines. With the FDA’s approval of the updated vaccines and efforts to debunk vaccine safety concerns, it is crucial to continue providing accurate information to the public.
