Annie Rauwerda has captured the attention of TikTok users with her endeavor to recreate a traditional medieval dish known as “perpetual stew.”

Perpetual stew is prepared by continuously simmering and replenishing the ingredients of a single pot of stew.

According to How Stuff Works, this 14th-century Polish stew stands out because it is regularly skimmed and strained, resulting in a dark, flavorful broth.

Those who enjoy the stew get to experience a complex combination of flavors resulting from the various ingredients added throughout its continuous cooking process.

Rauwerda’s journey with perpetual stew began in June when she announced her intentions on TikTok, @depthsofwikipedia. Rauwerda also manages an Instagram account with the same name, where she shares interesting discoveries from the popular site with over one million followers.

“More medieval behavior!” she captioned the TikTok video, which has gained more than 327,000 views and 35,000 likes.

In the video, she showcases the Crockpot that serves as the stew’s vessel and mentions that friends have been invited to contribute their own ingredients. To ensure food safety, How Stuff Works advises maintaining a temperature of around 200 degrees Fahrenheit for the soup throughout the cooking process.

In a subsequent video, Rauwerda demonstrates how her friends have indeed added their chosen ingredients to the stew, accompanied by the catchy “NFL on Fox” theme song playing in the background. Some of these ingredients include garlic, carrots, potato, parsley, and onions.

On the fourth day, Rauwerda updates her followers, revealing that dill has begun to overpower the flavor of the stew.

After six days of simmering, Rauwerda organizes a gathering in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, allowing strangers to contribute ingredients and taste the now-famous stew. Fliers were distributed to promote the event, and participants arrived with their own food contributions.

According to Rauwerda in a TikTok video following the meet-up, around 50 people attended and enjoyed the stew, with Rauwerda herself becoming recognized as “stew girl” during a trip to the grocery store.

Since then, Rauwerda has hosted two more stew parties on the 10th and 17th day of cooking.

In her most recent update on day 30, Rauwerda hosted another event where she distributed T-shirts and hailed an attendee named Stu as the “guest of honor.”

Rauwerda has even created a website dedicated to documenting her perpetual stew journey. The website includes the number of days the stew has been cooking, a daily progress breakdown, and testimonials from people who have tried a serving of the renowned stew.

“This stew changed every aspect of my entire life,” said Tessa Bury, one of the taste-testers, as quoted on the site.
