Passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas vessel falls overboard during cruise

An unfortunate incident occurred on Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas as a passenger went overboard while the ship was en route to Singapore. The Singapore Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received a notification at approximately 7:50 a.m. local time regarding the passenger falling overboard in the Singapore Strait, as stated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The cruise ship crew immediately collaborated with local authorities to initiate a search and rescue operation.

After initially berthing in Singapore to aid the investigation, Spectrum of the Seas departed at 4:30 p.m. as scheduled. A navigational safety broadcast was issued to vessels in the Singapore Strait and the port, advising them to remain vigilant for any signs of the missing individual.

The identity of the passenger has not been disclosed to the public. Royal Caribbean’s Care team is providing support to the passenger’s family during this difficult time.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, there have been 212 “man overboard” incidents on cruise ships with 170 fatalities between 2009 and 2019.

In July, a Carnival Elation cruise ship passenger went overboard off the coast of Florida. Additionally, in late May, a 35-year-old man fell overboard from a Carnival Magic cruise ship approximately 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida. Authorities also reported an incident in May where an 18-year-old individual from Louisiana went overboard during a sunset cruise in the Bahamas.
