Miss Universe Philippines-Parañaque Claire Dacanay, a contestant who is also a mother, and Mister Pilipinas Worldwide National Director and Manhunt International first runner-up Joshua De Sequera, who is proud to be a dad, are shaking up the pageantry industry by participating in The Miss Philippines Culture and Heritage Celebration. This national competition has become the most inclusive event in the country by allowing women who have children or are married to join. What sets The Miss Philippines apart from its sister pageant, Miss Universe Philippines, is that it accepts applicants up to 32 years old and does not impose height restrictions.
Organizers of The Miss Philippines stated, “Single, married, or a mother—you are a queen. And you are welcome to join The Miss Philippines! You don’t have to give up your dreams of joining a pageant yet because we believe that mothers and married women can be as effective as single women at being influencers and advocates of Philippine culture and heritage.”
This decision follows in the footsteps of Miss Universe Philippines, which first allowed mothers and married women to compete in the 2023 competition, complying with the Miss Universe Organization’s directive. Three mothers qualified as official candidates, and Claire Dacanay from Parañaque City made it to the semifinals.
In addition to these groundbreaking changes, The Miss Philippines has also decided to eliminate the swimsuit portion of the competition. Instead, candidates can wear their best formal attire, not limited to gowns, for the “red carpet moment” at the coronation show. Furthermore, the delegates will engage in a forum similar to Ted Talks rather than a traditional question-and-answer round.
Previously, Miss Supranational first runner-up Pauline Amelinckx became the first titleholder of The Miss Philippines, and now she will crown her successor in October. The winner will have the opportunity to choose between the 2024 Miss Supranational and the 2025 Miss Charm pageants as her international competition.
Following suit, the sister pageant for males, Mister Pilipinas Worldwide, is also embracing inclusivity by allowing single, married, and father contestants to join. Organizers of the competition stated, “Mister Pilipinas Worldwide is looking for the next influencer or male top model. Whether you are new to the industry or a working model, you are welcome to join.” Mister Pilipinas Supranational Johannes Rissler will pass on his national title to his successor in October, and the contest will also select the representatives for prestigious international male competitions such as Manhunt International Male Supermodel and Mister Global.
Applicants for both The Miss Philippines and Mister Pilipinas Worldwide will undergo screenings on September 2nd and September 9th at the Enderun Coworking Estancia in Pasig City.
