Orange County Register: South OC Community Stands United in Support of Couple Fighting Cancer Together

Cori Salazar, who had been on a hiatus from work due to her battle with thyroid cancer, returned to work only to receive shocking news: her husband Zak had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Cori’s own cancer journey began in April with a diagnosis of high-grade papillary thyroid carcinoma, and she had just undergone surgery on June 6. On June 28, Zak’s tumor was discovered during a routine eye exam.

Zak expressed his surprise at being told he had cancer, stating that it felt like a lie. Both Cori and Zak underwent immediate surgeries to remove their tumors. Zak is currently two weeks post-op and will require intensive treatment, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Despite the devastating news, the Salazar family remains positive and grateful.

The Salazars have three young daughters and enjoy spending time outdoors and with their extended family. Cori is a dental hygienist and Zak is a park ranger. Unfortunately, their cancer diagnoses have forced them to take leave from their jobs, but they hope to return soon. Zak also runs a popular YouTube channel called “The Ranger Zak Show,” where he educates children about nature and the outdoors. However, the show has been put on hold due to their cancer diagnoses and the birth of their third child.

The community in southern Orange County has shown immense support for the Salazar family, providing meals, cards, childcare, and even organizing fundraisers. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with medical costs, and the Salazars plan to donate any excess funds to someone facing a similar challenge.

Cori and Zak have learned the importance of asking for help during this difficult time and are grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. Despite the challenges ahead, they still have dreams and goals for their family, including their annual camping trip to the Eastern Sierra mountains. Zak’s personal goal is to overcome his cancer and live another 50 years to meet his grandchildren.
