Sept. 3 (UPI) — The Korean Central News Agency reported on Sunday that North Korea conducted a simulation of a tactical nuclear attack with mock nuclear warheads to make the United States aware of its nuclear capabilities.

The exercise occurred early Saturday and involved testing the launch approval system of the North Korean military. Two long-range cruise missiles were loaded and fired to replicate an actual attack.

The news agency stated that this simulation was a response to the annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea, which concluded on Thursday.

“The recklessness and danger displayed by the US and South Korea in their recent confrontation is unparalleled in history,” the statement read. “The Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea ordered a military drill to demonstrate its determination and capability to deter any attempts of aggression.”

The South Korean military detected multiple cruise missiles fired by North Korea into the Yellow Sea early Saturday. This marks the 18th missile test conducted by North Korea this year, a significant increase compared to previous years.

North Korea hailed the simulation as a success and announced its intention to further strengthen its nuclear preparations.

The Central Military Commission called upon all nuclear force personnel to remain on high alert and ready to respond. The objective is to make the United States and South Korea fully understand the severity of the threat posed by their exercise of war deterrence, according to the news agency.
