California Left with $5 Billion Bill After Hollywood Strikes

The Hollywood Writer Strikes Cost California $5 Billion

The strike by Hollywood writers has had a substantial impact on California’s economy, costing nearly $5 billion.

Both scriptwriters and actors went on strike to protest the financial compensation provided by streaming networks four months ago.

The strikes have affected an entire economic ecosystem, including caterers, dry cleaners, and drivers, according to research conducted by the Milken Institute, which shared this data with the Financial Times.

This strike is the first of its kind in 60 years. Celebrities such as Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, and Emily Blunt boycotted the US premiere of the summer blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” while Margot Robbie, who voices Barbie, also supported the strikes. Stars like Susan Sarandon have picketed as well.

The strikes have also posed a threat to the golden age of British TV and film production.

Crews at UK studios, including Shepperton which is used by Netflix and owned by Pinewood, have experienced a decline in work opportunities.

Despite this, spending on film and TV production reached a record high of £6.27 billion last year.
