North Korea declares expulsion of US soldier who crossed border

In a surprising turn of events, North Korean state media recently announced the imminent expulsion of a U.S. Army service member who had crossed into the country back in July.

The individual in question, Travis King, was originally stationed in South Korea and made a daring sprint across the border between North Korea and South Korea on July 18. This incident occurred on the very day he was set to return to the U.S. and face a court martial due to his involvement in a bar fight.

This particular incident marks the first time in nearly five years that an American has been detained in North Korea. According to state news, North Korean officials have completed their questioning of King, although they have not specified when or where he will be repatriated.

The official statement released by the North Korean agency reveals that King admitted to illegally entering North Korea. Supposedly, he did so because he held strong negative sentiments towards the alleged inhumane treatment and racial discrimination that he experienced within the U.S. Army. He also expressed disillusionment with the perceived inequality within American society, as reported by The Associated Press.

However, the authenticity of the comments attributed to King remains unknown.

This sudden and unexpected border crossing has left King’s relatives confused and concerned. His mother, Claudine Gates, stated that her son had “so many reasons” to want to come home. She expressed her disbelief that he would willingly choose to stay in Korea, considering he has family in America. Gates shared these sentiments during an interview with the AP last month.

As a result of his actions, King has been declared AWOL by U.S. military authorities. This offense can lead to serious consequences, including imprisonment, fines, or even a dishonorable discharge from the military.
