Nearly 20% of women who conceive a baby through IVF subsequently achieve pregnancy naturally

One in Five Women Achieve Natural Pregnancy After IVF

According to a scientific review, one in five women who have a baby through in vitro fertilization (IVF) may go on to achieve a natural pregnancy.

Thousands of women in the UK and the US undergo fertility treatments in an attempt to conceive.

Many women who have struggled to conceive for over a year, and have been diagnosed as “subfertile,” believe that getting pregnant naturally is impossible.

However, a review of 11 studies involving nearly 5,200 women over a span of 40 years has found that at least one in five women who have a child through fertility treatment will subsequently conceive naturally.

It’s possible that these women simply needed more time to conceive, or, as some experts suggest, the fertility treatment itself helped them get pregnant again.

Around 55,000 people a year in the UK have fertility treatment to try to have a baby. Many, who have tried unsuccessfully to conceive for more than a year, and are told they are 'subfertile', believe getting pregnant naturally is impossible

Other experts suggest that having one child could help with health conditions that cause infertility, such as endometriosis, or relieve the stress of trying to conceive, making it easier to get pregnant again.

Dr. Annette Thwaites, the lead author of the scientific review from University College London, said: “Our findings suggest that natural pregnancy after having a baby by IVF is far from rare.

‘This is in contrast with widely held views – by women and health professionals – and those commonly expressed in the media, that it is a highly unlikely event.’

The research, published in the journal Human Reproduction, analyzed global studies on natural pregnancy after IVF published between 1980 and 2021.

The overall data showed that at least one in five women conceived without assistance after having a baby through fertility treatment, primarily IVF.

Approximately 18% of women conceived naturally within three
