NBA Draft: Celtics Favored for Upcoming Season’s Title, Spurs Longshots at +25,000 Despite Wembyanyama

The San Antonio Spurs’ NBA title odds were not affected by the addition of first-overall draft pick Victor Wembanyama. However, with the acquisition of former All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, the Boston Celtics have become a favorite to win their 18th championship in the 2023-24 season, according to FanDuel’s post-NBA Draft odds.

FanDuel has recently released its post-NBA Draft odds, and there have been significant changes across the league. The most notable change is the Celtics surpassing the defending-champion Denver Nuggets as the favorites to win the title next season. Boston’s odds have improved from +500 to +460, meaning a correct $100 bet on a Boston championship in 2024 would result in a $460 win.

The Celtics’ improved odds are not due to a draft pick, but rather their agreement to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from Washington. This trade has caused Washington’s title odds with FanDuel to drop dramatically from +37000 to +50000. A successful $100 bet on the Wizards to win the title would now yield an astonishing $50,000 return.

According to multiple reports, the Wizards have agreed to trade Porzingis to the Celtics as part of a three-team trade that also involves Marcus Smart heading to the Memphis Grizzlies.

As part of the trade agreement, Porzingis has accepted his player option for the next season. The deal also involves the Grizzlies acquiring Marcus Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, from Boston, in exchange for first-round draft picks in 2023 and 2024. The Wizards are receiving guard Tyus Jones from Memphis, as well as forwards Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari, and a second-round pick from Boston.

The Celtics have added the 7-foot-3 Porzingis to their roster after falling short in the Eastern Conference finals, losing in seven games to the Miami Heat. Porzingis had an impressive season in Washington, averaging a career-high 23.2 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. He played in 66 games, his most since the 2016-17 season when he was with the New York Knicks.

Another team that experienced a decrease in their title odds on FanDuel is the Philadelphia 76ers. Their odds dropped from +1400 to +1700 due to rumors of All-Star guard James Harden potentially leaving the team in free agency next month.
