Deconstructing Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin

  • Attention: The following contains significant spoilers for season seven, episode two of the Starz series “Outlander.”
  • Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, in an interview with Insider, discussed Brianna and Roger’s decision to leave Fraser’s Ridge.
  • “It’s not really a decision,” Rankin explained. Skelton described it as “a farewell that feels permanent.”

The second episode of “Outlander” season seven introduced new characters and bid farewell to others.

The Revolutionary War, now in full swing, brought Jamie Fraser’s son, William Ransom, in contact with the Frasers for the first time. This encounter allowed him to meet his half-sister, Brianna MacKenzie.

In a surprising turn of events, Allan Christie resurfaced after Malva’s murder, only to confess to the crime and meet his demise.

One storyline that viewers anticipated in this episode was the birth of Brianna and Roger’s second child, Amanda.

However, this event took an unexpected turn when Claire realized that her new granddaughter has a heart problem beyond her surgical expertise. Claire informed the couple that their daughter needs modern medicine to survive.

By the end of the episode, Brianna and Roger made the heartbreaking decision to return to their own time period with their young family. Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin expressed their belief that this decision was final.

Skelton portrayed this farewell scene at the stone circle in Ocracoke as potentially the last time Brianna sees her parents. She explained that with Mandy’s heart issue and the impending American Revolution, they would not want to risk their daughter’s safety.

Rankin, however, held onto a glimmer of hope that the Fraser’s Ridge family could be reunited in the future, though he acknowledged the risks and uncertainties involved in time-travel.

This isn’t the first time Roger and Brianna attempted to return to their own time period. They previously tried in season five but found themselves tethered to Jamie and Claire’s life on Fraser’s Ridge.

However, this time, their love provided the strength to successfully complete the mission. Skelton explained that they didn’t have someone on the other side of the stones pulling them through; it was their urgency and love for their baby that propelled them.

Rankin agreed that their decision was not a choice but a necessity.

With Roger and Brianna back in their own time period, the show will feature two simultaneous timelines, one in 1776 and the other in the early 1980s, for the first time since season four.

Skelton and Rankin welcomed this change after spending previous seasons wearing period costumes and filming outdoors in the Highlands.

Skelton said filming in a studio felt refreshing, and Rankin noted that their characters’ ’80s looks gave the upcoming episodes a different feel.
