Nation’s Childless Couples Seek Compensation for Being Denied Parenthood

In the 1960s, an involuntary birth-control campaign was launched in Greenland by Denmark, the country’s former colonial ruler. Now, a group of women is demanding millions of dollars in compensation for the harm caused. Records show that between 1966 and 1970, 4,500 intrauterine devices (IUDs) were fitted into young females without their knowledge or consent. This shocking revelation was brought to light in a 2022 podcast by Danish broadcaster DR. According to the BBC, it is estimated that by the end of 1969, 35% of women of childbearing age in Greenland had been fitted with an IUD, but the campaign likely continued for several more years. It is important to note that Denmark controlled Greenland’s health system until 1991.
