National: Russian shelling in Ukraine claims lives of 3, leaves 17 wounded

Reports from Ukrainian officials on Saturday morning revealed an increase in civilian casualties due to Russian shelling in eastern and southern Ukraine. The visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Kyiv serves as a symbol of ongoing support from Madrid and the European Union for Ukraine’s efforts to push back against the invading Russian forces. In a speech to Ukraine’s parliament, Sánchez expressed the unwavering commitment of the European Union and Europe as a whole in standing against the illegal and unjustified Russian aggression towards Ukraine. Sánchez, who is currently holding the six-month rotating presidency of the 27-nation EU, will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and participate in a joint press conference later in the day.

Meanwhile, regional officials in Ukraine reported that three civilians were killed and 17 others were wounded in Russian shelling on Friday and overnight. Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko stated that three people died and 10 more were wounded in the eastern Donetsk region, which is currently experiencing intense battles. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed that clashes continued in three areas in Donetsk, where Russia has concentrated its troops and attempted to advance. The General Staff identified the outskirts of Bakhmut, Lyman, and Marinka as the front-line hot spots and revealed that Russia’s assault attempts in these areas were unsuccessful.

Regarding peace talks, Prime Minister Sánchez emphasized that only Ukraine has the authority to set the terms and timeline for negotiations. While other countries and regions have proposed peace plans, he stressed the need to distinguish between the aggressor (Russia) and the victim (Ukraine). Sánchez expressed support for President Zelensky’s peace formula, emphasizing that rewarding those who ignore the rules is unacceptable in the face of aggression.
