More than a Thousand Firefighters Tackle Portugal’s Wildfires during Intense Heatwave

During a scorching summer heatwave, over 1,000 firefighters are currently engaged in an intense battle against a series of wildfires that have ravaged Portugal and its neighboring country, Spain.

Portugal specifically is grappling with three major fires, with the largest inferno located in the southwest near Odemira. The National Civil Protection Service has reported the deployment of approximately 1,000 firefighters, 320 vehicles, and nine aircraft to combat the southwest fire, which has already devoured approximately 17,300 acres of land.

The recent surge in wildfires coincides with a spike in temperatures. The city of Santarem, situated about 50 miles northeast of the capital city, Lisbon, recently recorded the highest temperature of the year at a scorching 115.5 degrees Fahrenheit. While temperatures are predicted to decrease nationwide starting from Tuesday, they will mostly remain above 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Despite experiencing the third heatwave of the summer, Spain is faring slightly better with its wildfires.

Officials have confirmed that three of the fires that began over the weekend have either been contained or extinguished by Tuesday.

The largest blaze, located in the northeast, consumed approximately 1,500 acres of land and led to the evacuation of 150 individuals.

The only fire in Spain that remains out of control is in the southwest near the Portuguese border. Approximately 20 people from two rural hostels have been evacuated due to this wildfire. Firefighting efforts have been complicated by strong winds in the area.

According to Spain’s AEMET weather agency, temperatures are expected to continue rising until at least Friday, with certain regions in southern Andalusia reaching 111 degrees Fahrenheit.

A prolonged drought in Spain over the past two years has resulted in water restrictions in numerous parts of the country. The Ecological Transition Ministry of Spain has announced that national reservoirs are currently at 41% of their capacity due to the combination of high temperatures and severe rainfall shortage.
