Yankees Contemplating Skipping Luis Severino’s Start: Weighing All Factors

CHICAGO — Clarke Schmidt continued to impress with another great start for the Yankees on Tuesday. However, the team’s rotation for the rest of the week remained uncertain. As of now, Luis Severino is still scheduled to start on Wednesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. But after a 7-1 win over the White Sox, Boone revealed that the Yankees were considering all options for the series finale.

With a fresh bullpen and Thursday’s day off, the Yankees could potentially skip Severino’s start and opt for a bullpen game instead. They might use an opener before Severino takes the mound, as he has struggled with a 13.85 ERA in the first inning. Another option could be calling up Randy Vasquez from Triple-A for a spot start, although he is expected to fill Carlos Rodon’s spot in the rotation.

The Yankees also had to make decisions regarding their upcoming series against the Marlins in Miami. Nestor Cortes could start the series opener, but Boone mentioned the possibility of pushing him to Saturday. Cortes recently returned from the injured list and threw four strong innings in his last outing. The team wants to be cautious with his workload as he builds up his pitch count. The bullpen’s freshness will also play a role in determining the rotation order for Severino and Vasquez.

In other news, Aaron Judge had a productive night at the plate, hitting a home run and drawing three walks. Despite playing through a toe injury, Judge has been managing the games well and showing signs of improvement. Boone is optimistic about his progress, but the possibility of toe surgery in the offseason remains uncertain.

Behind the plate, Ben Rortvedt got the start over Kyle Higashioka for the second consecutive game. However, Higashioka made an impact off the bench with a two-run homer. Boone stated that the catcher position is a shared responsibility, but Higashioka is likely to start the next two games.

On a lighter note, Hall of Famer Jim Thome made an appearance at the game and engaged in conversations with Yankees staff and players. This followed former Steelers coach Bill Cowher’s presence during batting practice the day before.
