Missing Toddler Walked 3 Miles Barefoot With Her Two Dogs: Amazing Story Unfolds, Say Police

  • A missing Michigan girl made a remarkable journey through the woods, covering a distance of 3 miles barefoot, with her loyal canine companions by her side.
  • Fortunately, a civilian volunteer discovered her sleeping alongside her family’s rottweiler and cocker spaniel.
  • To everyone’s relief, she was found in good health, despite being barefoot, around midnight, according to the police.

A Michigan toddler who went missing managed to cover an impressive distance of 3 miles barefoot with her family’s loyal dogs in tow before eventually being found peacefully napping in the woods, according to police.

“It was quite a journey,” said Jeremy Hauswirth, the commander of the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post, describing where the girl was discovered. “Our best guess is that she followed a trail and bravely made her way with the loyal companions. She was barefoot, just determined to keep going.”

Brooke Chase, a resident of rural Menominee County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, raised the alarm around 8 p.m. on Wednesday when she realized her 2-year-old daughter and two dogs, a rottweiler and a cocker spaniel, were missing, as reported by local outlet WJMN.

“We searched everywhere around here,” Chase told WJMN. “The surrounding area is thickly wooded, with deep woods. There’s even a swamp nearby, so of course, we were extremely concerned. After about fifteen minutes of searching with our friends and family, I decided to call the police.”

Chase’s call triggered a four-hour-long coordinated search effort involving local troopers, canine units, civilian search and rescue volunteers, and aerial drones, all combing the dark woods in search of any signs of the missing girl, as Hauswirth informed Insider.

Finally, around midnight, a civilian volunteer riding a four-wheeler stumbled upon the 2-year-old, just as he was heading back to get more gas, Hauswirth revealed.

Hauswirth explained that the volunteer was alerted to the girl’s presence when the family dog, the rottweiler, unexpectedly jumped out, catching the driver’s attention. As Hauswirth told Insider, the volunteer then discovered the 2-year-old peacefully asleep on top of her other protector, the family’s cocker spaniel.

The girl was approximately 3 miles away from her home.

The volunteer easily picked her up, and she instantly fell back asleep in his arms, according to Hauswirth.

Hauswirth believes that the toddler managed to walk the entire three miles with the dogs faithfully accompanying her.

“The rottweiler always stays close to her. So I’m not sure if it was wearing a collar or she had her arm around it, guiding it. When a child sets their mind to something, they can leave quite a trail,” Hauswirth explained, emphasizing that toddlers are incredibly determined.

The girl underwent a medical check-up and was confirmed to be in good health by a police spokesperson, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.
