Michael Oher’s Words: A Compilation

Former NFL star Michael Oher has filed a lawsuit claiming that the adoption story portrayed in the movie “The Blind Side” is a fabrication. Oher alleges that he was never adopted by the Tuohy family and instead placed under a conservatorship. According to court documents obtained by Insider, Oher accuses the Tuohys of using him for their own benefit and exploiting him as a young and impressionable individual.

The filing, submitted in probate court in Tennessee, states that Oher was tricked into signing conservatorship papers, which he believed to be adoption papers. It wasn’t until February 2023 that he discovered the truth. The conservatorship gave the Tuohys legal control over Oher’s education and medical decisions, despite him having no known disabilities that warrant such an arrangement.

Furthermore, Oher claims that he did not receive any compensation for the movie “The Blind Side,” which was based on his rise to NFL stardom. In contrast, the Tuohys included their biological children in the contract negotiations, resulting in a significant financial gain for the family. Oher is seeking an end to the conservatorship, compensation for the profits generated by the film and the sale of his life rights, as well as damages, legal fees, and an injunction against the Tuohys from exploiting his name, story, or likeness in the future.

In response to the allegations, Sean Tuohy stated in an interview with the Daily Memphian that the family did not make substantial profits from the movie and that he had sold his own company for financial gain. He denied the claims of exploitation, stating that the conservatorship was established to comply with NCAA rules, allowing Oher to attend the University of Mississippi. Sean expressed his willingness to end the conservatorship according to Michael’s wishes.

These recent court filings bring into question the entire premise of the 2009 film. However, this isn’t the first time Oher has expressed his discomfort with “The Blind Side.” In his autobiography from 2011, Oher criticized the film for portraying him as “dumb” and needing to be taught football. He argued that the movie misrepresented his true abilities and undermined his hard work.

Expressing further frustration in 2013, Oher stated that he was tired of discussing the film and wanted to focus solely on football. In 2015, he claimed that the movie had a negative impact on his professional career, as people judged him based on the film rather than his actual skills as a player.

In reflection, Oher describes the movie as a source of pain and hurt in his latest book. The controversy surrounding “The Blind Side” continues to unfold as Oher seeks justice and clarification regarding his alleged adoption by the Tuohy family.
