Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, launches Threads as a direct competitor to Twitter

Meta has launched its latest app, Threads, which bears a strong resemblance to Twitter. Threads is an extension of Instagram and allows users to share text posts, links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long. Its release was expedited to take advantage of the turmoil at Twitter following CEO Elon Musk’s controversial changes. Existing Instagram users will automatically receive a Threads account with the same username, although they will need to download the Threads app. Threads is available in over 100 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Celebrity endorsements have come from the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Shakira, and Lando Norris. To obtain a blue tick verification symbol, users must subscribe to Meta Verified, which costs £10 per month. Threads aims to expand upon Instagram’s focus on sharing photos to create a space for text updates and public conversations. Users can follow others, view recommended content, and interact through the thread, reply, and repost features. Threads also incorporates familiar security measures from Instagram, such as filtering out specific words and the ability to block or report profiles. The app is seen as a strategic move by Meta, as existing Instagram users can seamlessly transition to Threads without the need for a separate sign-up process. While Twitter has just under 400 million active users, Meta hopes to capitalize on the recent backlash against Twitter’s introduction of paywalls for certain features. The launch also follows a heated exchange between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, with an invitation to a physical “cage fight” being extended. The Colosseum in Rome has even been suggested as a potential venue.
