Subway Implements a Major Change Worth $80 Million

Subway has made a significant change to its deli meat, with 20,000 of its US restaurants now slicing ham, pepperoni, roast beef, salami, and turkey fresh in-store every day. This is a departure from the previous practice of slicing meat in Subway’s factories and shipping it to stores. The chain plans to showcase this shift by prominently displaying the new $6,000 slicer in about 80% of its stores. Subway purchased the slicers for its franchisees at a cost of approximately $80 million. However, some items like steak, rotisserie chicken, and cheese will still be pre-sliced. This move comes as Subway faces competition from Firehouse Subs, Jimmy John’s, and Jersey Mike’s, which emphasize freshness and have increased their store numbers while Subway has closed 7,000 locations in recent years. Subway is currently exploring a sale of the business and expects to make an announcement later this month. It’s worth noting that Subway’s bread was once ruled to not qualify as bread by a court. To celebrate the new slicing practice, Subway is introducing four new sandwiches and offering up to 1 million free 6-inch subs between 10 am and noon on July 11th.
