Mercedes EQS Car Review: Exploring the Remarkable Silence of the All-Electric SUV

The EQS is an exquisitely luxurious and incredibly spacious SUV that can comfortably seat seven people across its three rows of lavish accommodations. While it may come with a hefty price tag of around €140,000, the multitude of features and advancements it offers make it worth every penny.

Stepping into the mammoth interior of the EQS feels like entering a paradise of beige luxury. The cabin is not only incredibly spacious, but it also exudes a sense of comfort that is unmatched. However, despite its grandeur, there was still a sense that something was missing. I’ll delve deeper into that momentarily.

Let’s first delve into the details. This large SUV shares its wheelbase of 3,210mm with the less bulky EQS hatchback that has been previously reviewed. Additionally, it boasts the same 108.4kWh lithium-ion battery. With a length of 5,125mm and a height 200mm taller than the hatch, this SUV is an immense piece of engineering, weighing approximately 2.7 tonnes.

Charging the battery is a breeze, with the ability to charge at up to 200kW. In just 31 minutes, it can go from a 10% charge to an impressive 80%. The energy regeneration on the test car proved to be quite efficient.

The version I had claims an impressive range of up to 626kms on a single charge, and during my testing, it came quite close to this figure. While it falls a bit short of the EQS hatchback’s claim, it’s expected given the size and weight of this SUV.

Despite its weight, the EQS showcases its refinement in every aspect. Luxury car manufacturers constantly strive to push the boundaries of opulent comfort, and the EQS certainly stands out in this regard. The combination of plushness and power is truly awe-inspiring. Even the smallest details and touches were meticulously crafted, leaving a lasting impression.

The quietness of the cabin is another remarkable feature, with minimal wind and tire noise thanks to the innovative design and the use of noise-absorbing materials. I purposely took it on recently smoothed and renewed roads, and the silence was deafening. It’s hard to say if the BMW i7 can match this level of serenity, as it is a close call.

Competitors in the market for this SUV include the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX, Tesla Model X, and other luxurious SUVs like the Range Rover.

The air suspension system provides exceptional comfort, even though it may feel a bit too soft in normal mode. It tends to dip slightly more than desired, but this is a minor criticism. Most people will undoubtedly appreciate the smooth and silent ride.

On the motorway, the EQS truly excels, with its ability to automatically slow down to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. It effortlessly keeps the car centered in the lane, almost doing everything except actually driving for you. If it did any more, it would practically be able to drive itself. This, however, highlights a drawback – the lack of driver involvement. While it’s undoubtedly praiseworthy, it leaves something to be desired in terms of the excitement and dynamism typically associated with performance-oriented cars.

I must admit, I had concerns about maneuvering this behemoth in a multi-story car park at Dublin airport, given its sheer size. Even from inside, the back window seemed miles away, making me feel quite small behind the wheel. However, I’m pleased to report that I navigated it flawlessly. Despite its size, it was surprisingly easy to position thanks to numerous parking aids. The overall visibility from the high driving seat position was exceptional.

In such a generously proportioned cabin, I did find that the seat felt a bit narrower than I would have preferred. It’s possible that I may have gained a few extra kilos, but it’s also plausible that Mercedes is focused on sporty seating. Nevertheless, it wasn’t a major discomfort.

While the boot space is decent when the third row is occupied, it may not suffice for all seven passengers’ luggage. However, it easily accommodates the belongings of five individuals.

Would I purchase the EQS? Without a doubt, I would instantly buy it for the refined experience and extensive comfort it provides. It truly stands out in terms of excellence and remarkable features. The only area where it falls slightly short is in driver involvement, but that is subjective and may not be a concern for everyone. Overall, it’s another significant milestone for large electric vehicles and a testament to Mercedes’ prowess.
