Lewis Hamilton expresses discomfort as F1 officials neglect to wear masks during Australian GP briefing

Lewis Hamilton expressed his discomfort when members of Formula One’s governing body failed to wear face masks during a drivers’ briefing for the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. The briefing, chaired by F1’s new race director Niels Wittich, took place at Melbourne’s Albert Park and lasted for two hours. During the meeting, Wittich announced stricter regulations regarding jewelry and mandated the use of fireproof underwear.

While it is not mandatory to wear face masks in enclosed spaces under local law, Hamilton found it unsettling that most of the FIA members present did not wear masks. Hamilton, who qualified fifth for the race, shared his thoughts, saying, “No one in the drivers’ briefing was wearing masks. Some of the drivers were, but most of the FIA representatives were not, and that made me uncomfortable.”

Furthermore, Hamilton mentioned that the briefing was the longest he had ever experienced and questioned the FIA’s attention to seemingly trivial matters, such as underwear regulations. Despite his reservations, Hamilton acknowledged the need to move forward and adapt.

Currently, Hamilton trails championship leader Charles Leclerc by 29 points heading into the race. Leclerc, driving for Ferrari, secured pole position, while Hamilton struggled with his underperforming Mercedes car, finishing almost a second behind. Reflecting on the situation, Hamilton admitted, “We haven’t made any progress. I sincerely hope that over the next week, we can gather more information and find a solution. As it stands, we don’t have anything better. Winning seems far away with such a significant gap.”

Despite his challenges on the track, Hamilton expressed appreciation for the teamwork and camaraderie within his team. He remains hopeful that they can overcome the obstacles they currently face and ultimately achieve success.
