Oscar-winning filmmaker and deep sea expert, James Cameron, draws parallels between this week’s tragedy involving the implosion of the Titan submersible craft, resulting in the deaths of five passengers, and the sinking of the Titanic, which he has extensively explored during his 33 dives to the wreckage site. Cameron believes that in both cases, unheeded warnings were a contributing factor.

The Titanic, the subject of Cameron’s classic film in 1997, met its fate when it struck an iceberg and sank in 1912, claiming the lives of over 1,500 people.

According to ABC News, Cameron revealed that concerns about the safety of Oceangate’s passenger-carrying submersible vessel had been brought up by individuals in the diving and engineering communities before its implosion. He draws a parallel between the captain of the Titanic, who was warned about ice ahead of the ship but disregarded the warnings, and the recent tragedy. Cameron finds it remarkable that warnings continue to go unheeded, especially considering the amount of diving activity taking place worldwide.

Reflecting on the situation, Cameron describes it as “astonishing” and “surreal.”
