The Bibby Stockholm, an accommodation vessel, arrived in Falmouth, Cornwall, Britain on May 9. However, due to the discovery of traces of Legionella in the onboard water system, the British government ordered the evacuation of all asylum seekers on Friday. This precautionary measure aims to assess the source of the disease and ensure the safety of the migrants. Although no individuals onboard have shown symptoms of legionnaires’ disease, appropriate advice and support are being provided to the asylum seekers.

Legionella is a bacteria that can cause legionnaire’s disease and other respiratory infections when small droplets of water containing the bacteria are inhaled. Although Legionella was found in the vessel’s water, there is no immediate risk indication for the rest of Portland. Critics of the government’s decision to house refugees on the Bibby Stockholm argue that the presence of life-threatening bacteria is a result of the government’s neglect and punitive policies towards the asylum system. According to Freedom From Torture, this negligence puts both the refugees and the general public at risk.

Prior to the evacuation order, concerns had already been raised about the safety issues on the vessel, and the fire department had not yet given it a clean bill of health. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and controversies surrounding the treatment of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom.
