Lee: The Most Powerful Category 5 Hurricane of the Season Unleashed

Hurricane Lee, the first Category 5 storm of the Atlantic season, is headed towards the northeast Caribbean. While landfall is not expected, tropical storm conditions could affect some islands. Meteorologists have yet to determine the potential rainfall and wind gusts. Currently, Hurricane Lee is located approximately 705 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, with winds reaching up to 160 miles per hour. Moving at a speed of 14mph in a west-northwest direction, the storm is expected to remain a major hurricane throughout the next week. This hurricane is the 12th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 and peaks in September. Tropical Storm Margot, the 13th named storm, was formed on Thursday evening.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Lee is rapidly gaining strength. President Joe Biden received updates on the hurricane’s trajectory and the preparations being made by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency. The agency has deployed resources to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The Lesser Antilles will experience life-threatening surf on Friday, followed by the British and US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, and Bermuda over the weekend. The US East Coast can expect dangerous surf and rip currents starting from Sunday. In August, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration predicted between 14 to 21 named storms this season, with six to 11 of them potentially becoming hurricanes, and two to five developing into major hurricanes.
